Travemünde Week Concludes Amidst Unpredictable Weather and Anticipation for Future Expansion

The Travemünde Week, one of Schleswig-Holstein's largest sailing events, has come to a peaceful end, as reported by both local authorities and the police. The event, which attracted approximately 540,000 visitors and featured around 350 boats and 770 sailors, was marked by unpredictable weather throughout its duration.

One of the highlights of the Travemünde Week was the race for the coveted "Rotspon Cup," a classic event within the second-largest sailing event in Schleswig-Holstein. This year's race saw a thrilling duel between the mayors of Lübeck and Kiel, with Ulf Kämpfer, the mayor of Kiel, taking home the trophy and bringing it to the state capital.

As the Travemünde Week draws to a close, plans for future events are already underway. Frank Schröder, managing director of Travemünde Week, has expressed interest in organizing a sailing match race in the city harbor of Lübeck. However, this is still under consideration, as organizers need to assess the space and wind conditions for viability.

The organizers of the Travemünde Week presented a mixed review. While they were pleased with the success of this year's event, they anticipate that the increased number of participants in 2026 and 2027 may reach the capacity limits for accommodating sailors. With this in mind, they expect significant growth in participant numbers, enough to test the capacity limits of the available space for sailors and their boats.

A notable development in this year's Travemünde Week was the expansion into the historic center of Lübeck. In addition to the traditional sailing activities, a stand-up paddle race received a positive response from participants and spectators alike.

As the Travemünde Week concludes with a fireworks display on Sunday evening, the focus shifts to the plans for future events. The potential expansion into Lübeck city harbor, with the possibility of hosting sailing activities such as Match Race competitions, represents an exciting prospect for the future of this popular event.

The Commission, in light of the success and increased number of participants at Travemünde Week, has been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, considering the potential expansion into Lübeck's historic center and increased sailing activities. After the thrilling Travemünde Week, some participants might consider a lifestyle change, incorporating more outdoor activities like stand-up paddle racing, and even travel to other cities with similar events.
