Airline in Turkey Modifies Rules for Carrying Lithium Batteries During Flights
Turkish Airlines has recently updated its safety guidelines for carrying lithium batteries and portable charging devices on its flights, following recommendations from Türkiye’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation. These changes aim to enhance in-flight safety and reduce fire risks.
Firstly, smart luggage with non-removable lithium batteries is completely banned from both cabin and checked baggage. If a passenger has smart luggage with a removable lithium battery, the battery must be completely removed and carried separately in the cabin baggage. It cannot be reattached until reaching the final destination.
Regarding portable power banks, Turkish Airlines allows up to 20 spare lithium batteries or power banks under 100 Wh without approval. For devices with a capacity between 100-160 Wh, passengers must obtain permission from the airline. Power banks over 160 Wh are prohibited on board.
The use of power banks, e-cigarettes, and external batteries during flights is strictly prohibited. This restriction follows safety concerns after incidents involving lithium battery devices inflight. Turkish Airlines and its subsidiary, Pegasus Airlines, have previously implemented measures banning the use of power banks on board.
Smart suitcases must be checked-in and batteries removed to comply with the rules. Passengers can now bring power banks with a capacity of up to 100 Wh on board. These higher-capacity devices are often found in professional equipment and certain laptop models.
The changes are based on recommendations from the Civil Aviation Authority and align with similar measures implemented by other airlines. Power banks, e-cigarettes, and external batteries are still strictly prohibited for use during flights to ensure passenger safety.
