Chinese Premier Urges Unity at UN's 80th Anniversary, Warns Against 'Cold War' Thinking

Chinese Premier Li Qiang marked the UN's 80th anniversary by calling for unity and multilateralism, warning against protectionism and 'Cold War' thinking. He highlighted China's commitment to sustainable development and peacekeeping efforts.

Premier Li addressed the global economy's sluggish growth, blaming tariff hikes and barriers. He stressed China's dedication to 'high-quality belt and road cooperation' with over 150 countries and opening its economy wider to the world.

Li warned against unilateralism and protectionism, which he said were undermining the international order. He praised China's role in promoting political solutions to conflicts, including Ukraine and the Israel-Palestine crisis. China, as the second-largest budgetary contributor and the largest troop contributor among Security Council permanent members, is a 'staunch defender of world peace and security'.

In 2025, during the UN's 80th anniversary celebrations, China and the UN agreed to build a global center for sustainable development in Shanghai. This reflects China's commitment to sustainable development strategies and deeper collaboration with the UN, aligned with the UN Agenda 2030 and the UN80 initiative.

Premier Li urged world leaders to defend multilateralism and reject 'Cold War' thinking. He called for all countries to be treated as equals, regardless of size, and warned against 'civilizational superiority or ideology-based circles'. China, having contributed about 30 percent of global economic growth in recent years and lowered tariffs, is committed to playing a constructive role in global affairs.
