Citizens' Groups Urge Restoration or Replication of Neptunbrunnen

The Neptune Fountain, a magnificent work of art created by Reinhold Begas in 1891, stands proudly between the Mary Church and the Red City Hall in Berlin. This masterpiece, inspired by Baroque and Italian models, is a testament to the city's rich history and cultural heritage.

The Neptune Fountain, once a centerpiece of the city castle square, was walled up in 1942 during the Second World War. Remarkably, it survived the conflict relatively unscathed. After the demolition of the city castle in 1951, the fountain was dismantled and stored away. It wasn't until 1969 that the fountain was rebuilt at its new location in front of the Red City Hall.

Today, the Neptune Fountain remains at its current location, as per the will of the Senate Building Director, Petra Kahlfeldt. However, a group of citizens' associations, including the Berliner Bürgerverein Alt-Berlin, the Verein Berliner Stadtbild, and several others, are advocating for the return or at least a replica of the fountain to its original location on Schlossplatz.

The alliance, which also includes the Berliner Historische Mitte e.V., Errichtungsstiftung Bauakademie, Forum Stadtbild Berlin e.V., Gesellschaft Historisches Berlin e.V., Planungsgruppe Stadtkern, and the Berlin local branch of the association Stadtbild Deutschland e.V., believes that the redesign of the castle square would be beneficial for the overall complex Humboldt Forum.

The initiative of these citizens' associations may influence the current plans of Petra Kahlfeldt and the Senate Department for Urban Development, Building and Housing regarding the redesign of the castle square.
