Frankfurt's preferred alfresco symphony isn't just melodious; it's the Grand City Chimes. Prior to major religious celebrations, a grand total of 50 bells from various churches aim their harmonies skyward - on the eve of the first Advent, on Christmas Eve, on the Saturday before Easter Sunday, and on the Saturday before Pentecost. This year, prepare for a brand-new beat to take the stage.

Among the ranks of ten downtown churches, you'll find the Paulskirche, the Hauptwache's Katharinenkirche, and the Old Nikolaikirche on the Römerberg, alongside the Imperial Cathedral's nine bells, anchored by the Gloriosa - Frankfurt's most prominent and formidable bell, weighing a staggering 11,999 kg.

Enriched Experience

The forthcoming rendition of the Grand City Chimes, set to ring between 4:30 and 5:00 PM this coming Saturday, will be the handiwork of the Ensemble Modern - a globetrotting collective of soloists right here in Frankfurt. The aim? A more immersive sonic experience.

The Ensemble Modern's creation, christened "supra urbem," will command performance annually on Pentecost Saturday. "Above the city" is how the title translates in Latin. For the other dates, the traditional composition by Mainz bell expert Paul Smets, dawning on the city in 1954, will remain the linchpin of the tradition.

Initially, the bells will strike out in solo fashion, starting with the highest notes and progressing to the deepest resonances. "Approximately 15 minutes in, they will blend together, returning to their familiar syncopation," as the city’s announcement reads.

The city disclosed that the decision to chime out on Christmas, Easter, and Pentecost was first made in 1856, earning the distinction of "Grand City Chimes" later on.
