Consultation on draft directive regarding radiation safety for workers, involving Commission input on potential risks.
Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport has been facing recurring issues with security control bottlenecks, causing delays and missed flights for passengers. The trade union Ver.di has criticised the insufficient staffing resources at the airport, urging responsible parties to develop a sustainable and long-term solution.
According to the State Presidency, passengers are advised to arrive at least two hours before their departure to avoid delays at security controls. However, the exact number of passengers affected by these issues in 2021 is not clear. While there was a brief mention of a one-day strike involving security staff that disrupted flights last year, no specific passenger figures or explicit reference to 2021 security delays were provided.
This year, the Ministry of Transport reported that approximately 700 travelers were affected by delays at security controls. The long waiting times are due to the strong growth of the airport, with a 25 percent increase in passengers and a shortage of skilled workers. Unscheduled sick leave from air security control forces and a struggling commissioned security company at the airport have also contributed to the delays.
On August 2, 94 travelers missed their flight, and 25 were affected on August 5. The State Presidency assumes that passengers arriving too late at the control points were a factor in the delays on August 5, as the controls were fully staffed on that day.
The State Presidency of Stuttgart consistently appeals to the responsible parties to increase personnel at security controls. They are currently investigating the incidents and considering measures to address the recurring problems at security controls. However, the airport in Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden has not yet announced any specific plans to address these issues.
To mitigate the risk of missing flights, the State Presidency recommends that all travelers plan enough time, with at least 90 to 120 minutes between boarding and security control being necessary, especially during the holiday season. A "more generous buffer" is advisable to ensure a smooth travel experience.
In total, 119 passengers missed their flights at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport due to the security control issues this year. Despite these incidents, the State Presidency of Stuttgart considers Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport well-equipped for the main travel season. They are committed to continuing their efforts to improve the situation and increase the number of employees at the airport.
