Electronic Equipment, Tablets, Photoshop, and Education: Diving into the Digital Learning Space
The Digital Learning Lab (DLL) at Princeton University is a vibrant hub that supports students and faculty in integrating digital tools into teaching and learning. Located in 328 Frist Campus Center, the DLL is part of the McGraw Center for Teaching and Learning and offers a range of services aimed at enhancing digital learning experiences.
The DLL's offerings are diverse and comprehensive. Workshops and consultations are available to help individuals learn how to use various digital technologies and pedagogical approaches. These may include training on educational software, digital content creation, and instructional design.
In addition to workshops, the DLL provides resources for digital teaching, offering assistance in using learning management systems and multimedia tools. Faculty and students can also receive guidance on designing and implementing digital learning initiatives.
The DLL is equipped with 24 Apple Mac Pro computers, each featuring 32 GB RAM and large 27-inch displays. Adobe Creative Cloud, Apple audio and film tools, prototyping software, data tools, and more are available on these computers. The lab also houses Wacom drawing tablets, scanners for documents, film, and transparencies, an audio studio for recording, and tools for digitizing analog audio and film.
Sketch, Rhino, Blender, Processing, R, R Studio, STATA, and numerous other software options are available at the DLL. If you need help, you can find a directory of student staff listed with their specialist on the DLL's website. Staff members are available during open hours for assistance, or you can reach out to a specialist in the area you are interested in to schedule a one-on-one.
Princeton students also have a free subscription to Lynda online courses, which provide in-depth tutorials on a range of programming languages, software, and digital tools.
The DLL is open seven days a week and offers equipment and software for a variety of creative pursuits, such as recording a song, editing a photo, designing a webpage, making a 3D model, visualizing data, and more.
This semester, the DLL will host a series of workshops focused on web development and user experience design, catering to a growing interest in these areas. The DLL is also undergoing renovation this summer to better serve professors and instructors who use the space in their courses.
If the DLL's open-hours don't align with your schedule, you could also check out the J Street Library, which offers similar resources and an Equipment Lending program. The DLL has previously been featured in various posts on library guides, course selection, Rare Books and special collections, career services, and Lynda.com.
Olivia Grah '19, a DLL specialist, shared that the DLL helped her get up to speed on Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop basics. Whether you're a beginner or an expert, the DLL is a valuable resource for anyone seeking to expand their digital skills and creativity.
