Expanded Sunday hours at Dusseldorf's Central Library

In a significant move, several libraries in Düsseldorf are now open on Sundays, joining the Central Library at Konrad Adenauer Platz (KAP1) which has already been offering Sunday services. The libraries in Bilk, Eller, and Unterbach will now be accessible from 13:00 to 18:00 (Bilk and Eller) and 11:00 to 18:00 (Unterbach).

The Central Library, known as a "city living room" for many residents on Sundays, will extend its operating hours from January 5, 2025, from 13:00 to 18:00 to 11:00 to 18:00. Approximately 3,000 people visit the Central Library every Sunday, with a majority being families with young children or young people aged 15 to 25 using the library as a study space.

For safety and security, the Central Library, Bilk, and Eller branches will have security personnel present during their Sunday operating hours. Access to the Unterbach library is granted via the library card on Sundays.

Unlike regular days, there is no staff consultation on Sundays at any of these libraries. Visitors can browse books, read magazines, or use other services in peace. However, no specific mention of the number of visitors on Sundays for the branches in Bilk, Eller, and Unterbach has been made.

More events are being offered on Sundays at the Central Library since fall, but no additional events are being offered on Sundays at the branches in Bilk, Eller, and Unterbach as of now. The extended hours will also apply on holidays when the Central Library is open.

It's worth noting that no mention of the libraries serving as a "city living room" on Sundays has been made for the branches in Bilk, Eller, and Unterbach. The libraries in Düsseldorf, besides the Central Library, are generally not open on Sundays; only the Central Library is open Sundays from 11:00 to 18:00. No other city branch libraries in Düsseldorf list Sunday opening hours. This is confirmed by Düsseldorf city library information.

The demographic composition of visitors on Sundays for the branches in Bilk, Eller, and Unterbach has not been specified. The operating hours for the libraries in Bilk and Eller are 13:00 to 18:00, while Unterbach operates from 11:00 to 18:00.

This change in operating hours aims to provide more convenience for residents and students in Düsseldorf, offering a quiet and peaceful space for study, reading, and exploration on Sundays.
