Exploring the Wilderness of Chitwan with Meghauli Serai Safari
In the heart of south-central Nepal, nestled within the Terai region, lies a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers - Chitwan National Park. Established in 1973, it was Nepal's first national park and was later declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. This expansive park, covering approximately 952.63 square kilometres, is renowned for its rich biodiversity and diverse ecosystem.
Chitwan National Park is a dream safari destination, home to a wide variety of wildlife. The park is famous for its population of the one-horned rhinoceros, a species that was once severely threatened but has recovered due to conservation efforts. Other notable inhabitants include wild elephants, Bengal tigers (though sightings are rare due to their elusive nature), sloth bears, leopards, various species of deer and monkeys, and over 500 species of birds, making it a paradise for bird watchers.
In addition to mammals and birds, Chitwan is home to significant reptile and aquatic species such as the King Cobra and Rock Python, monitor lizards, and over 100 species of fish in the Narayani-Rapti river system. Mugger crocodiles and gharial crocodiles can be found along the rivers, adding to the park's rich tapestry of wildlife.
Visitors to Chitwan National Park can explore the park via jungle walks, jeep safaris, or elephant-back safaris, each offering opportunities to observe this diverse wildlife in their natural habitat. The park’s terrain and ecosystem provide a rich experience for nature enthusiasts and wildlife photographers alike.
During a recent visit, the author had the privilege of staying at Meghauli Serai, a luxury safari lodge that is part of the Taj Hotels group. The stay was sponsored by PATA and the Himalayan Travel Mart, but all words and opinions are the author's own.
Upon arrival, the author found the lodge to be a stark contrast to the difficult journey they had endured. The villa at Meghauli Serai Lodge is enormous, luxurious, and offers a private plunge pool overlooking the Rapti River. The main building of the lodge is light and airy with towering ceilings and beautifully decorated with local art. The villa's bathroom is larger than some bedrooms, featuring an enormous bed, an outdoor shower, and cooling stone tiles.
The safari experience at Chitwan National Park was nothing short of extraordinary. The author was able to observe various wildlife such as deer, wild boar, monkeys, and multiple one-horned rhinos. The closest encounter was observing a rhino bathing in a river, approximately 15 feet away from the observers. The experience of being so close to a wild rhino was described as incredible.
A memorable moment during the safari was watching a mother and baby elephant playing in a river. The author also had the opportunity to witness pristine footprints of a Bengal tiger in the dusty road, though the elusive creature remained hidden.
The last activity at Meghauli Serai was a boat safari, followed by a traditional banquet and local tribal dance performance. The author's brief stay at Meghauli Serai safari lodge was one of the travel experiences that stayed with them forever.
