In the southwest of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, the Lake Constance region continues to be a significant contributor to the local tourism industry. According to a market research study commissioned by the Tourism Marketing GmbH Baden-Württemberg (TMBW), the lake is one of the most important tourist destinations in the region [1].
The picturesque Lake Constance, known as Bodensee in German, is not only a major natural attraction but also one of the largest lakes in Central Europe, shared by Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. It offers a beautiful setting for various activities such as boating, cruises, and hiking. The pleasant climate, scenic views, and surrounding attractions like Mainau Island (a floral island) make it a popular summer destination [1].
The TMBW study found that 94% of respondents in Baden-Württemberg would recommend their own state as a vacation destination, with the Lake Constance region being particularly popular. This high approval rate was even higher at 96% for short vacations and day trips [1].
The lake's popularity is further evidenced by the large number of overnight stays. In 2021, over 22 million overnight stays were recorded around Lake Constance, with approximately 8.2 million of these in Germany [1]. Despite the importance of good weather for many tourists, only 19% of the respondents would only consider a vacation at Lake Constance if the weather is good. By August 5, around 77% of the respondents stated they would vacation at Lake Constance regardless of the weather [1].
The Lake Constance region is popular not only with domestic tourists but also with international visitors. The region is home to several notable attractions, including Germany’s largest theme park, Europa-Park, the historic Schloss Heidelberg, the Mercedes-Benz and Porsche Museums, the famous Black Forest, and Mainau Island [1][3][4]. These attractions draw visitors for their unique experiences such as theme parks, historic sites, cultural museums, scenic landscapes, and botanical gardens.
Christine Schönhuber, CEO of TMBW, stated that the new numbers confirm the popularity of staycations in Baden-Württemberg. She also noted that only 4% of the survey respondents stated a preference for traveling further away instead of vacationing at Lake Constance [1]. This strong demand for staycations in the region suggests a positive outlook for the local tourism industry.
