Federal funding reductions result in Madera Planned Parenthood's shutdown
In a significant blow to public health in Madera, Planned Parenthood Mar Monte has announced the closure of its clinic in the city. The closure is part of a larger shutdown that includes four other clinics in South San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, and Gilroy.
The closures are primarily due to the loss of about $100 million in federal Medicaid funding following budget cuts enacted under President Donald Trump's administration. The funding restrictions specifically target nonprofits that receive substantial Medicaid reimbursements and provide abortion care, effectively defunding Planned Parenthood clinics that meet certain criteria in the new law.
Last year, Planned Parenthood Mar Monte served over 22,000 patients across its clinics, with more than 80% being low-income and reliant on Medicaid. The clinics provided not only reproductive health services but also family medicine, behavioral health, and prenatal care.
The closure of the Madera clinic leaves a gap in healthcare services for the community. Resident Jessica Mendoza expressed shock at the closure, as she relies on the services offered by Planned Parenthood. Dr. Simon Paul, Mader Public Health Officer, shares the concern, stating that some patients may fall through the cracks due to the closure, as they may be unsure about seeking care at new locations.
Dr. Paul also mentioned that cancer screenings are among the services provided by Planned Parenthood, making the closure even more concerning for the community's health.
Stacy Cross, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Mar Monte, mentioned it's horrible to lay off staff and make cuts due to the funding losses. Over 60 staff members are being let go across the five closing locations.
Planned Parenthood Mar Monte will continue to have 30 locations across California and Nevada after these closures. However, for the residents of Madera and the affected cities, the closure represents a substantial loss of local healthcare access, particularly in underserved areas where alternatives may be limited.
