Chalk it up to an unexpected pitstop—an Easyjet flight ferrying passengers from London to Santorini took a detour to Munich thanks to some unsettling smoke in the cabin. According to a company spokesperson, this unplanned landing was due to a peculiar technical issue uncovered during the journey from the British mainland to sunny Greece.
The Airbus A320 aircraft, approximately 200 versions and with registration G-EZUA, operating as flight U2-8239, began its journey from London Gatwick Airport; its destination was the picturesque island of Santorini. As the flight progressed, passengers reported a confusing aroma of smoke wafting through the cabin. Based on Easyjet's confirmations, the smoke was visible only in smell, not sight. The pilots, aware of the situation, subsequently declared a priority report, holding off on a "Mayday" distress call typically reserved for emergencies carrying immediate risk to passengers.
Eventually, the plane touched down in Munich Airport, where ground crews stood by as a standard, precautionary measure. After landing safely, the plane's passengers awaited transport to Santorini on a backup aircraft later that evening, reaching their intended destination unscathed.
While the sources do not offer much insight into the technical details regarding the smoke or fumes, it is clear that the presence of fumes at the rear of the aircraft led to the emergency landing.
