Revamped News: Southwest Airlines Refund Drama

Here's the lowdown on Southwest Airlines' ongoing chaos following their festive season debacle.

Southwest Airlines: Still Causing Headaches

It's been a week since Southwest Airlines' major meltdown over Christmas, but the airline isn't out of the woods yet. TPG called on our readers who had flights canceled or severely delayed between Dec. 24, 2022, and Jan. 2, 2023, to share their refund woes, and wow, have they got stories to tell.

Tales of Woe

Of the 100+ respondents to our call, a majority had filed for refunds, yet less than a quarter received them. In fact, many travelers are still in the dark about their refund status, and about a third are yet to receive their luggage.

One annoyed reader, Larry Box, had to jump through hoops to get a partial refund for his additional travel expenses, despite initial easy approval. The catch? They required itemized receipts, a requirement that wasn't clear in their instructions.

Another customer, Frederick Barber, felt that Southwest's refund web page was lacking in user-friendliness, with no confirmation page or case number upon submission. Plus, communication from Southwest has been limited to no-reply emails, making it challenging to track requests or ask questions.

Rewarding Rewards Redemption

While almost no one has relied on travel insurance to help with the affected flights, remember that these protections can be valuable during such crises. Some of our favorite travel rewards cards, such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Sapphire Reserve, and The Platinum Card from American Express, offer travel insurance when you pay for travel with your card.

Still Missing In Action – The Luggage

Several travelers shared their frustration over missing luggage. Tony Reyes' luggage appears to be either stuck in Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport or on its way to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, with no certain location as of yet.

Stephanie Coleman's family dealt with multiple flight cancellations, had to purchase additional flights, and are still waiting for their luggage, now over a week late. Other passengers face the same predicament.

Something Fishy About Those AirTags

Some travelers have located their missing luggage thanks to AirTags, but the catch is they can't access them until Southwest alerts them.

Credit Card Protections: Don't Forget 'Em

Travel insurance can save you a boatload when travel goes awry, so remember to make the most of your travel cards. Some of our fave travel rewards cards include the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Sapphire Reserve, and The Platinum Card from American Express, offering valuable travel insurance protections for trip delays, cancellations, and interruptions.
