Holiday Regulations for Easter in Neuss and Kaarst: Approved Activities and Prohibited Actions

As Easter weekend approaches, Germany has announced specific regulations and exceptions for various commercial activities, traffic, and public entertainment events.

Starting with traffic, heavy goods vehicles over 7.5 tonnes and trucks with trailers are banned from driving from midnight to 10 PM on Good Friday (18 April), Easter Saturday, Easter Sunday, and Easter Monday (21 April). These restrictions aim to ensure that heavy goods vehicles are off the roads for most of the Easter weekend.

In terms of trading and commerce, Good Friday is a public holiday, and trading on stock exchanges like Börse Frankfurt does not occur. However, settlement activities may still be open. Easter Saturday and Sunday are non-working days, and most retail businesses are closed, following the general public holiday rules in Germany. Certain markets or electronic platforms might operate with specific rules, but general retail and public services are closed.

Regarding retail and liquor sales, there are no specific restrictions on liquor sales during Easter weekend that differ from other public holidays in Germany. Most retail stores are closed during Easter Sunday and Monday, as these are public holidays. Some exceptions might apply for specific types of businesses or services.

Entertainment events outside of residences, theatrical and musical performances, film screenings, and lectures during the main church service hours are prohibited on Good Friday. Large markets can start as early as 3 AM on Holy Saturday. Shops primarily selling flowers, plants, newspapers, magazines, or baked and confectionery goods can be open for five hours on Good Friday and Easter Sunday, but must be closed on Easter Monday. Gaming halls, commercial betting, musical and other entertainment performances in restaurants, and other public entertainment events must be closed on Good Friday.

Agricultural businesses are an exception and can sell their own products for five hours on all Sundays and holidays, including Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Markets, including flea markets and private car markets, are not allowed from 5 AM on Good Friday until 6 AM on Holy Saturday.

The Kreis Ordnungsamt advises considering the meaning of the holiday in other events as well. Dancing is prohibited on Maundy Thursday (March 28) from 6 PM, and sporting events and folk festivals are also prohibited on Good Friday.

Overall, Easter weekend in Germany involves a general closure of most public services and retail businesses, with specific traffic restrictions for heavy goods vehicles. It's essential for residents and visitors to be aware of these regulations to ensure a smooth and enjoyable Easter weekend.

Lifestyle-wise, retail businesses are typically closed on Good Friday, Easter Sunday, and Easter Monday, allowing for celebration and family time. However, flower and plant shops, bakeries, and newspaper stands may operate for limited hours.

For those who enjoy fashion-and-beauty, salon services might be available but it's advisable to confirm beforehand since regulations may vary.

Those planning to cook special dishes for their relationships during Easter weekend should note that food-and-drink shopping may be restricted on certain days as per the general retail closures.

For pet owners, normal services such as vets, pet stores, and grooming services may still be open, but it's best to call ahead to ensure operation hours.

Travel enthusiasts, take note: trains might be busier due to traffic restrictions on heavy goods vehicles, so consider planning trips outside of those hours. And remember, some attractions or events might be closed during the Easter weekend due to the public holiday rules. Lastly, car owners should also adhere to the specified traffic regulations to ensure safe travels during Easter weekend.
