India's Tourism Industry Unites to Revive Domestic Travel Post-COVID
The Indian tourism industry, a key driver of the country's economy, is facing unprecedented challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this, stakeholders are united in their commitment to revive and strengthen the sector, with a focus on domestic tourism.
The pandemic, a 'Black Swan' event, has led to a significant slowdown in international travel, making domestic tourism the key to the industry's recovery. India's rich cultural heritage, diverse geography, and ancient traditions like Yoga and Ayurveda offer immense potential for domestic tourism growth.
To boost the sector in the short term, the government is considering measures such as interest-free or low-interest loans, exemption of TCS under GST, and deferment of annual statutory dues. These steps aim to provide immediate relief to stakeholders facing a liquidity crunch.
Looking ahead, Puneet Chhatwal has proposed the establishment of an 'Empowered National Tourism Board' through a Public Private Partnership model. This board, whose official founding date is yet to be announced, is envisioned to strengthen India's tourism sector in the long run. The board will work towards elevating infrastructure, creating new destinations, and marketing initiatives to increase tourist footfalls.
The Indian tourism industry, employing millions and contributing significantly to the GDP, is crucial for the nation's prosperity. With continued support from all stakeholders, the industry is poised to overcome current hurdles and scale new heights, leveraging India's unique strengths and focusing on domestic tourism.
