Alliance for Diversity and Equal Opportunities Makes a Bid for Integration Council in Bergisch Gladbach
In September, residents of Bergisch Gladbach will have the opportunity to elect a new Integration Council, and one of the contenders making a strong push for representation is the Alliance for Diversity and Equal Opportunities. This group, established in 2020, has been actively involved in municipal integration work and has made significant strides in promoting diversity, equality, and inclusion.
The Alliance has a diverse team of 24 candidates, equally divided between women and men, hailing from various backgrounds and professions. Among them are Nesreen Hussein, a pedagogical specialist with personal experiences as part of an immigration society, and Sema Keskin, a mother of two and office clerk with Turkish roots, who advocates for the voices of often-overlooked groups, particularly women and children with international family backgrounds.
The Alliance stands firm against discrimination and racism, and their goals include promoting equal opportunities, participation, respectful coexistence, and strengthening the Integration Council. They aim to create social and professional perspectives for refugees, improve educational outcomes for children with international family histories, and foster intercultural competence and multilingualism for an open society.
In addition, the Alliance plans to open sports clubs to people with international family histories, establish a dialogue forum between police and migrant communities/organizations, and honour the life's work of the so-called "Guest Worker Generation" (1955-1973) with a memorial site on the Zanders area.
The candidates of the Alliance for Diversity and Equal Opportunities stand for a fair, open-minded, and solidarity-based Bergisch Gladbach. They also advocate for increased political participation, notably municipal voting rights for third-country nationals.
