Is it prohibited for students in Baden-Württemberg schools to wear masks?

The Government Presidency in Karlsruhe has issued a clarification to dispel the confusion caused by reports of a mask ban at schools in the region.

According to the School Act, it is generally prohibited for students of public schools to cover their faces at school events (§ 72 paragraph 3a). However, this regulation does not apply if mask-wearing is required to fulfill a legal or regulatory obligation.

The Government Presidency, as the supervisory authority for schools, has explained the current legal situation regarding mask-wearing in schools. The individual health protection already provided for in the regulation takes precedence. Students and teachers have the possibility to wear masks for health reasons, and the decision on this will be made at the school.

It is important to note that there is no such legal obligation to wear masks in schools. The protection of vulnerable students and teachers is particularly important, especially during times of numerous respiratory infections and a high number of COVID infections.

The reported mask ban at schools in Karlsruhe is not accurate, according to the Government Presidency. The alleged mask ban at schools, which was reported by the Southwest Press in Ulm on Tuesday, has caused confusion among citizens. The Government Presidency Karlsruhe stated that it has never issued a mask ban at schools.

For civil servants, the regulation results from § 34 paragraph 2 of the Law on the Regulation of the Status of Officials in the Länder (BeamtenStG).

It is worth mentioning that there is currently a mask requirement in schools in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, including during breaks, as part of COVID-19 regulations. This rule applies from a specified recent date (starting from a Saturday mentioned in July 2025), according to the government response reported by SWR and related sources. The Government Presidency Karlsruhe, as the regional authority, would be responsible for implementing and enforcing these regulations.

School principals implement this regulation responsibly at the schools. Students and teachers have the possibility to wear respiratory masks for individual health protection.

The Government Presidency Karlsruhe's clarification was issued in a press release to dispel the misleading impression created by the reported mask ban at schools in Karlsruhe.
