New Museo Casa Kahlo Offers Intimate Look into Frida Kahlo's Life and Art
A new museum, Museo Casa Kahlo, has opened its doors in Mexico City, offering a more intimate look into the life and artistic influences of Frida Kahlo. The museum, designed by David Rockwell of the Rockwell Group, is located in the Coyoacán neighbourhood, blocks away from the iconic Casa Azul.
Frida Kahlo's family influence played a significant role in her artistic journey. Her father, Guillermo Kahlo, an architectural photographer and painter, taught Frida how to paint and view the world as an artist. The new museum aims to tell a more complete story of Frida's life, including her artistic influence from her father and the strength instilled by her mother.
The museum features a basement sanctuary that served as Frida's personal space for painting, writing, or listening to music. Visitors can expect to see previously unseen letters written by Frida, early sketches, and personal effects like her pre-Hispanic jewellery and embroidered blouses. The museum also boasts multimedia installations, including sensory experiences like smelling traditional Mexican coffee in the kitchen, recreating Frida's world for visitors. The original courtyard has been recreated as an homage to Frida's hospitality.
Museo Casa Kahlo, opened in 2025 after preparations that began in 2008, is a must-visit destination for those interested in Frida Kahlo's life and art. With the assistance of publicist Rick Miramontez and financial patronage from Victor Aboumrad Tame and Victor Aboumrad Chedraui, the house has been transformed into a museum that promises a more comprehensive understanding of the iconic artist.
