Refurbishing the Movement and Updating the Case of Gilbert Admiral Calendar Clock
In the world of antique clock collecting, the Gilbert Admiral clock stands out as a prized possession. One collector recently acquired a No. 3027 Gilbert, also known as the Admiral, which required some TLC to bring it back to its former glory.
The clock's centre pinion, a crucial component of its movement, was cracked, loosened, and had dropped down the shaft. After careful diagnosis and preparation, the collector considered various repair methods.
For minor cracks, welding or brazing might be used to repair the pinion. This requires specialized equipment and expertise. However, the collector decided to replace the cracked pinion with a new one, ensuring reliability and maintaining the clock's original performance. Sourcing a replacement pinion that matched the original in terms of material and dimensions was crucial.
The dial of the clock featured a factory paper dial, but the maker's name was painted out on the bottom. The clock, a running Gilbert Admiral 8-day time-only octagonal short drop circa 1901 model 3027, also known as a schoolhouse clock with calendar, was in need of some restoration.
The clock's case, too, required attention. The brass bezel was very tarnished, and the case needed some TLC. After cleaning, the oak grain of the case became visible, adding to its charm. During the final assembly, all Robertson screws were replaced with slotted ones for a more secure fit.
The paper dial of the clock was left as-is due to difficulty in cleaning. The mainspring of the clock's movement was in very good condition and had plenty of life left. The brass bezel and inner dial ring were cleaned, restoring their original shine.
The clock's movement was tested on a test stand for several days to confirm its functioning and to regulate it. The hands of the clock, originally Maltese and stripped of bluing, were painted black, while the calendar hand, stripped of red paint, was painted barn red.
The clock, now fully restored, is one of three gallery clocks in the collector's collection. The collector, having successfully repaired the cracked centre pinion, can now enjoy the convenience of the clock's wall placement and its ability to draw attention, as well as the history and craftsmanship that come with owning a Gilbert Admiral clock.
Given the specificity of clock repair, consulting a professional clockmaker may be advisable if you are not experienced in these techniques.
