In a recent statement, Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder has expressed his opposition to a proposed change that would lower the legal blood alcohol limit for drivers to zero for all categories. The current limits, as Minister Schnieder explained, are as follows: drivers aged 21 and over with more than two years of experience have a limit of 0.5 per mille, while novice drivers and professional drivers have a zero-tolerance policy.

Minister Schnieder supports maintaining the current limit of 0.5‰ for experienced drivers, considering it sufficient and effective. He acknowledges that moderate alcohol consumption at social events does not necessarily impair road safety, emphasizing the importance of evaluating driving behavior in context.

However, Schnieder is more concerned about the unpredictable effects of cannabis on driving. He believes that further investigation into these effects is necessary during the current legislative period. The Minister also commented on other transport issues, such as opposing blanket speed limits on highways and doubting the need for mandatory driving tests for elderly drivers.

The Federal Statistical Office found in 2023 that older people were less often involved in traffic accidents than younger people, relative to their share of the total population. Despite this, Schnieder has not provided any information about his stance on mandatory driving tests for the very young.

Minister Schnieder's stance reflects a balance between road safety concerns and practical social realities. He drives an electric car in his home region, the Eifel, and does not consider a speed limit necessary on German motorways due to many speed limits, construction sites, and traffic jams that contribute to the low average speed on motorways, which he stated is not even 115 kilometers per hour.

| Driver Category | Current Alcohol Limit | Minister Schnieder's Position | |---------------------------|----------------------|--------------------------------------| | Experienced drivers (21+) | 0.5‰ | Support maintaining 0.5‰ limit | | Novice and professional | 0.0‰ | No change (already zero tolerance) | | Proposed 0.0‰ for all? | Not implemented | Opposed by Schnieder |
