Skeptic Embarks for inaugural voyage on a cruise liner
Venice, Italy, has barred ships over 180 meters long from its waters since 2021, making the 'Explora I', with its maximum capacity of 1,000 guests, too large to navigate the city's canals. Despite this, the Adriatic remains the chosen route for the 'Explora I', praised by experts for its calmness in late summer and varied stages.
The 'Explora I' belongs to MSC cruise line, a company committed to sustainability. In fact, MSC Group aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050 through innovations like fuel flexibility and advanced technologies across their fleet.
Medium-sized ships like the 'Explora I' generally have a lower environmental impact compared to larger cruise ships due to their smaller size and passenger capacity. However, the overall impact depends on various factors, including fuel type, energy efficiency, and operational practices. MSC Group's sustainability efforts apply across their fleets, including larger and medium vessels.
The 'Explora I' is equipped with modern stabilizers to minimize seasickness and offers a more intimate, luxurious experience compared to larger ships. The ship features balcony suites, spacious deck salons, and a variety of restaurant offerings, providing a sense of relaxation and enjoyable conversations with people from various parts of the world.
Bernhard Krieger, an avid expedition cruise enthusiast, was initially deterred by the Drake Passage but discovered medium-sized cruise ships like the 'Explora I' through cruise fans. However, concerns about mass tourism and environmental impact still linger. A trip on the 'Explora I' is not cheap, with seven days in summer from Venice to Athens costing from 4,400 euros per person.
The 'Explora I' is docked in the industrial port of Marghera, Venice, during check-in. Despite its location, the atmosphere on board is casual, without formal captain's dinners. Italian sailors maintain superstitious practices, such as hanging a bowl of garlic cloves, chili peppers, and holy cards on the bridge.
