Solange Knowles Launches Saint Heron: A Digital Archive Library of Rare Black & Brown Authors
Solange Knowles, the renowned singer and songwriter, has launched a unique digital archive library called Saint Heron. The library, which opened its virtual doors in 2013, offers a curated collection of rare and out-of-print works by black and brown authors, poets, and artists.
Saint Heron's collection is a treasure trove of literary gems, featuring works by esteemed authors such as Ntozake Shange, Lucille Clifton, Etheridge Knight, Ruby Dee, Octavia Butler, Langston Hughes, May Miller, Audre Lorde, and Rita Dove, among many others. The library operates on an honor-based borrowing system, allowing each U.S.-based resident to reserve one book at a time, fulfilled on a first-come, first-served basis.
The library is completely free to use, with registration required through the Saint Heron website. Books are shipped directly to borrowers at no cost, including return postage. However, borrowers are responsible for any lost or damaged books, which will be charged at market value.
Saint Heron is a remarkable initiative by Solange Knowles, providing U.S.-based residents with access to a wealth of literary works that might otherwise be difficult to obtain. By offering these rare and out-of-print titles, the library helps to preserve and promote the voices of black and brown authors, poets, and artists.
