Southern Italian Hamlet Preserves Spotless Shores and Scenic Sea Vistas
Sicily, Italy's southern jewel, is a treasure trove of stunning coastlines, delicious cuisine, and unbelievable natural wonders. Nestled in the southeast corner of the island, the tiny town of Fontane Bianche stands out due to its pristine waters fed by undersea springs.
Just seven miles from Syracuse, Fontane Bianche offers a serene escape from the bustling city. The clarity of the water here is thanks to a series of underground springs that constantly replenish it, making it an ideal spot for swimming and snorkelling.
Syracuse, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a short 15-minute drive away. Home to some of the most impressive Greek and Roman archaeological sites in Italy, Syracuse is a must-visit. The ancient city and the Isle of Ortigia, found near Noto, were founded by the Ancient Greeks. Syracuse is home to a stunning cathedral built on top of an Ancient Greek temple, the dramatic Castello Maniace fortress, and the charming Giudecca neighborhood, the historic Jewish Ghetto of Syracuse.
Noto, another 15 minutes further from Avola, has become popular in recent years due to its ornate architecture and a recent appearance on HBO's "The White Lotus." Noto is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its stunning cathedral dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Myra, its palazzi, and Sicilian Baroque architecture.
Avola, a 15-minute drive from Fontane Bianche, is famous for its wine, the dark red Nero d'Avola. The town is also known for almond-growing and the delicious sweet treats made with almonds, like 'confetti' (sugared almonds) and granita. Tenuta Palmeri, a vineyard just outside of Avola, offers informal tastings.
Travelling to these destinations is convenient. There's a train that whisks you from Syracuse to Fontane Bianche in 15 minutes, and it can also be reached by bus in about 45 minutes. The nearest airport to Fontane Bianche is the Catania International Airport, around 45 miles away and just under an hour by car.
Sicily's rich and diverse history and heritage are evident in every corner of these towns. Southern Italy is often overlooked as a vacation destination compared to the north, but a visit to Syracuse, Noto, and Fontane Bianche is sure to change that perception.
