The renowned Edmundsklamm is set to resume operations
The Edmund Gorge in Bohemian Switzerland will reopen to visitors this Saturday, July 19, 2025, following a two-year closure due to the 2022 forest fire. The reopening marks a significant milestone in the recovery of the landscape, reflecting close monitoring and strict visitor management to protect public safety.
Visitors will require a same-day guided group ticket, sturdy footwear, and adherence to a strict daily visitor limit of 50 people. Tickets are sold only on the day of the visit, exclusively at the information centre in the town hall of Hřensko, with no reservations or advance sales allowed. Prams, dogs, small children, and people with reduced mobility are currently not allowed.
Access may be suspended depending on weather conditions, particularly for safety reasons concerning boat operations. The boat trip goes through Edmund Gorge only, turning back at the end; it is not possible to continue walking to the neighboring Wild Gorge. Some nearby trails remain closed due to fire damage and ongoing safety management.
The minister emphasized the close cooperation between Saxony and the Czech Republic in the development and preservation of the national parks. Unique vegetation thrives in the gorges due to cold air accumulation. The distance between the gorges is 1.5 kilometers, and the boat trip through the Edmund Gorge lasts approximately 20 minutes, while the Wild Gorge trip lasts approximately 15 minutes.
The Elbe Sandstone Mountains attraction has been closed since the summer of 2022 due to safety concerns following forest fires. The gorges were made accessible in the 19th century by Prince Edmund Clary-Aldringen. Saxony's Environment Minister Georg-Ludwig von Breitenbuch (CDU) was invited to the reopening of the Edmund Gorge.
Future tourist development, unique nature experiences, and environmental awareness promotion will require joint action between Saxony and the Czech Republic. Visitors with strollers, dogs, small children, or people with limited mobility are currently excluded from a visit. In case of bad weather, the navigation will be suspended and decided on a day-to-day basis. Visitors can only purchase tickets for the current day at the tourist information office in Hrensko.
