Tourism in North Rhine-Westphalia: A Challenging Year Amidst the Pandemic
The tourism industry in North Rhine-Westphalia has faced a challenging year, with a significant decline in tourist arrivals and overnight stays due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the latest statistics, holiday, vacation, and training homes saw an increase of 114,002 guests compared to September 2020. However, compared to the first nine months of 2019, the number of guests decreased by 61.6%, and the number of overnight stays by 51.1% in 2021 [1]. These figures refer to open accommodation providers that offered at least ten guest beds or pitches during the reporting period.
The decline in tourism was not limited to North Rhine-Westphalia. From January to September 2021, 7.0 million guests visited accommodation providers and camping sites in the region, a 25.4% decrease from the first three quarters of the previous year [1].
Youth hostels and campsites experienced the largest increase in arrivals compared to September 2020, with 73,778 additional guests. On the other hand, camping sites saw a slight decrease in arrivals, with 96,335 guests, a 0.5% drop from September 2020 [1].
The number of guest arrivals from abroad in September 2021 was 1.7 million, a 22.9% increase from September 2020 but 26.0% lower than September 2019 [1]. This trend reflects the overall global collapse in international travel during the pandemic.
The pandemic caused tourism activities in the region to drop sharply, with airlines cancelling flights and travel infrastructure operating at a limited capacity or shutting down. The strong decrease in international tourist arrivals during this period was a direct consequence of these restrictions and the global health emergency [1].
