Turkey Strengthens Ties with Spain through New Air Route

Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu made these comments at the "Connect to Türkiye" event in Seville on September 20, 2025. The occasion was marked by the launch of a new Istanbul-Seville route by Turkish Airlines (THY), a global brand with operations reaching 355 points in 131 countries today.

Uraloğlu hailed the new route, stating that it is symbolic of Turkey's efforts to strengthen ties with Spain. He noted the centuries-old friendship between the two Mediterranean nations, shaped by art, culture, and trade. The minister emphasized that this friendship will be further fostered through mutual benefits in tourism, trade, education, and culture.

The new Istanbul-Seville route is expected to boost tourism, trade, and cultural exchanges between the two countries. Seville, with its rich history and iconic landmarks such as the Alcazar Palace and the Giralda Tower, will be introduced to the Turkish people. In return, Turkey will showcase its unique attractions to the Spanish.

Uraloğlu also highlighted the significant growth in Turkey's transport and infrastructure over the past 23 years. The number of highways in Turkey has increased from 1,714 kilometers to 3,796 kilometers, and the number of divided roads has expanded from 6,101 kilometers to 29,852 kilometers. The number of railways in Turkey has grown to 13,919 kilometers, with 2,251 kilometers for high-speed trains.

Turkey has invested approximately $300 billion in transport and communications infrastructure during this period. Major infrastructure projects include Marmaray, the Eurasia Tunnel, Istanbul Airport, Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge, and the 1915 Çanakkale Bridge.

Uraloğlu also addressed the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He stated that Turkey, along with Spain, stands firm in support of the Palestinian people's pursuit of justice and peace, within the bounds of international law and human rights. He emphasized that those responsible for the events in Gaza will face accountability under international law.

The number of international flight points in Turkey has grown from 60 in 50 countries to 353 in 132 countries. The number of domestic active airports in Turkey has risen from 26 to 58. Additionally, yacht marina capacity in Turkey has reached 26,000 across various locations.

Türkiye and Spain are united by historical bonds, and this new air route is a testament to the strengthening of their friendship. Both countries stand ready to fulfill their responsibilities in promoting peace and fostering cultural and economic ties.
