UCLA's marching band showcases their 'Golden Melodies' in Japan
UCLA Bruin Marching Band Performs at Ekitopia Festival in Nagoya, Japan
The UCLA Bruin Marching Band made a memorable trip to Japan in May 2018, participating in the 35th annual Ekitopia Festival Parade in Nagoya. The band, led by Governor Hideaki Omura, was warmly welcomed to the city.
The band's journey began on May 2, with their arrival in Nagoya. After a day of rest, they rehearsed on May 3, preparing for their performance the following day. On May 4 and 5, the UCLA Bruin Marching Band took centre stage, delighting the crowds with their energetic performance.
Following their performance, the band visited several historical sites in Kyoto on May 6. Some of the notable places they visited included Kinkaku-ji, the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, Kameyama-koen Park, and Fushimi Inari-taisha.
The Ekitopia Festival is held annually during Japan's "Golden Week," a national holiday that includes The Emperor's Birthday, Constitution Memorial Day, Greenery Day, and Children's Day. This year, the festival was graced by several local high school bands and traditional Japanese dance troupes, in addition to the UCLA Bruin Marching Band.
It is worth noting that the UCLA Bruin Marching Band has a history of visiting Asia for performances. In 2006 and 2008, they participated in the Chinese New Year Night Parade in Hong Kong. In 2016, they attended the Taoyuan International Band Festival in Taiwan.
Interestingly, in 2010, fourteen members of the UCLA Drumline also performed at the Ekitopia Festival Parade in Nagoya, Japan. This demonstrates the university's continued commitment to cultural exchange through music.
The UCLA Bruin Marching Band's international performances span multiple years, including 2006, 2008, 2016, and 2018. Their trips to Asia for performances have included events such as the Chinese New Year Parade, the Taoyuan International Band Festival, and the Ekitopia Festival.
After their memorable trip to Japan, the band returned to Los Angeles on May 7, no doubt carrying with them unforgettable memories and experiences from their Asian adventure. The UCLA Bruin Marching Band continues to be a shining example of cultural exchange through music, and their performances around the world serve as a testament to their dedication and passion.
