The Sea & Sea YS-D3 Lightning strobe proved its worth during a recent underwater photography workshop aboard the luxurious Rocio Del Mar in the Sea of Cortez. The workshop, which took place in July 2020, saw the workshop leader impressed by the YS-D3 strobes and deciding to upgrade from his Sea & Sea YS-D2Js.

One of the standout features of the YS-D3 Lightning strobe is its high-speed recycling time, essential for capturing fast-moving marine life. This quick succession of flashes ensures that no moment is missed, resulting in clear, vibrant images.

The YS-D3 also offers adjustable flash power, providing flexibility to adapt lighting to different underwater conditions and subjects. This feature allows photographers to fine-tune their lighting to suit the environment, enhancing the overall quality of their photos.

The compact and lightweight design of the YS-D3 makes it easy to handle during dives, minimizing gear bulk. This is a significant advantage when navigating the underwater world, where every gram counts.

The wide-angle illumination of the YS-D3 evenly lights scenes underwater, reducing shadows and enhancing colour. This feature is particularly beneficial in the Sea of Cortez, known for its clear water, abundant sun, and unique underwater topography, which creates a variety of lighting conditions.

The YS-D3's reliable waterproof construction is designed to function under high-pressure conditions typical of deep dives. This ensures that the strobe can withstand the rigours of underwater photography, providing peace of mind for photographers.

The YS-D3 is also TTL compatible with many camera systems, automatically controlling flash output for optimal exposure. This feature simplifies the photography process, allowing photographers to focus on capturing their subjects rather than worrying about technical details.

The YS-D3's built-in prism concentrates the targeting light, making it brighter than the target lights on the YS-D2J. This feature, combined with the dome diffusers, helped reduce backscatter when photographing sea lions.

The quality of the beam from the YS-D3 strobes was particularly notable at higher powers. The beam is noticeably nice and subtle, adding colour to the subject without appearing artificial. At lower powers, the YS-D3 strobes had no recycle times below 1/4 power, making it easy to capture well-lit photos of quick fish.

At full power, the YS-D3s had a recycle time similar to the YS-D2Js. The light from the YS-D3 strobes was even and suitable for underwater photography, producing beautiful results in the Sea of Cortez.

The Sea & Sea YS-D3 Lightning strobe's snoot, made specifically for the YS-D3, is an affordable and useful accessory. This accessory allows photographers to focus the light, improving the quality of their photos and reducing the amount of light pollution in the underwater environment.

The Sea of Cortez Workshops for 2021 are scheduled for July 2, July 24-31, and August 7 - 14. Prices start at $2,845, making it an affordable opportunity for photographers to improve their underwater photography skills and experience the Sea of Cortez's underwater wonders.
