Visitor center and café at Lock 16 in La Salle continue operations despite halt to canal boat services
The Illinois and Michigan Canal in La Salle is making a significant change. After running for 17 years, the popular tourist attraction featuring boats pulled by mules, including Moe and Larry, will come to an end on September 28th.
The decision to discontinue the attraction is due to a lack of funding, and the two mules involved - Moe and Larry - will find new homes.
Moe, a 35-40-year-old mule, is retiring and currently enjoying his days relaxing. The organization responsible for the rehoming of Moe is the Illinois & Michigan Canal National Heritage Corridor.
On the other hand, the 5-year-old mule named Larry will be sold to continue his career elsewhere. There have been two inquiries on Larry, indicating a promising future for the young mule.
The Canal Corridor Association, led by President/CEO Ana Koval, is responsible for the decision to retire the mule-drawn attraction.
Despite the closure of the mule-drawn attraction, visitors can still enjoy the Lock 16 Visitor Center and Cafe, located at 754 1 St. in La Salle. The center operates from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesday-Sunday.
The visitor center and cafe will continue operations, providing a unique insight into the history and culture of the Illinois and Michigan Canal.
This change marks a new chapter for the Illinois and Michigan Canal in La Salle, and the community looks forward to seeing what the future holds. Moe, the beloved retiree, will be given to a good home, ensuring he lives out his days in comfort and peace.
